All About Pre-Testing

This page answers many questions people have about pre-testing before surgery.

Why Do I Need Pre-testing?

Although anesthesia is much safer than it was just a couple of decades ago, much of that safety is due to recognition and proper treatment of pre-existing medical conditions. Patients who are healthy or having very minor surgery may not need pre-testing. Others may require sophisticated testing to evaluate heart or lung function. The goal of pre-testing is to be sure every patient is in as good shape as possible before surgery.

I Saw My Doctor a Couple of Months Ago, Are Those Results Good?

They may be. In general, blood tests are valid for 30 days, unless the results were abnormal or the patient has a condition that causes frequent changes in the results. EKGs are considered valid for six months, unless the patient has had more recent cardiac symptoms. Chest X-rays are considered valid for one year, unless the patient has had more recent respiratory symptoms. The results of a physical exam are considered valid for one week to one month, as determined by state and federal regulations.

When Should I Have Pre-Testing?

We recommend pre-testing about seven to ten days before elective surgery. Testing in this time frame assures that all results are still valid at the time of surgery, and that any abnormalities can be properly addressed. Pre-testing closer to surgery increases the risk of postponing the surgery for abnormal results. Please note that pre-testing just before surgery does not increase the risk to the patient, because we will not proceed with a case if we do not have acceptable pre-testing results.
